STORY COMPREHENSION
Story Comprehension for Young Readers
STORY COMPREHENSION gives young readers short stories with questions about them. Answering who, where and what happened teaches children to read with understanding, not just to say the words.
Use STORY COMPREHENSION one story at a time: read together, talk about it, then let the child answer. The book is a free PDF on Google Drive, linked from the button below. First passages are in Kindergarten Easy Reading Comprehension Passages.
About Story Comprehension
Story Comprehension is a workbook of story-based comprehension exercises for young readers. Short stories are followed by questions and activities that check — and build — understanding: who, where, what happened, and why.
Reading words is only half of reading; the other half is carrying the story with you. Story Comprehension trains that second half directly, story by story, question by question.

Use Story Comprehension for guided reading lessons or home reading practice, one story at a sitting. The download is linked from the button on this page.
Understanding Stories in Story Comprehension
A child can read every word of a story and still miss the story. Story Comprehension exists for that gap, teaching readers to hold characters, sequence and meaning together.
Questions that Teach
The questions after each story are ordered like a good conversation — first the facts, then the reasons, then the feelings. Story Comprehension uses that order deliberately, so pupils learn what understanding is made of.
Retelling and Thinking
Activities ask children to retell, order events, and predict endings, turning passive reading into active thinking. Teachers find Story Comprehension doubles as assessment: the answers show exactly where each reader’s understanding stops.
Story Comprehension for Home Reading
At home, one story before bed with its questions turns storytime into gentle teaching — children barely notice the learning inside the ritual. Story Comprehension fits family reading precisely because its stories come first and its questions feel like talk.
Phonics groundwork for these stories lives in Phonics Book Word Families with Short Vowels.
